Great food in Swellendam

I thought that I finished my Swellendam posts.  But then realized that there was one more post left.  FOOD.
When it is time to eat on a trip, we mostly go to franchise restaurants we know.  We know the food will be good and more importantly we know what the cost will be.  But on the weekend in Swellendam we decided to try something new.  And it was a great decision.

Mattsens Steakhouse
On Friday night on host at the guesthouse suggested a few places to eat.  We decided to try Mattsens.  It was a lovely autumn night and we sat outside under the trees with a lantern giving light.  Great atmosphere.  It was still early and not very busy.  The staff was very friendly and service was fast.  H ate an ostrich burger and he loved it.  I had a very good chicken burger.  The portions were huge.  It was good value for money.

Oppi Stoep
For lunch on Saturday afternoon we stopped at Oppi Stoep.  This café is located close to the museums and historical buildings and was a great place to stop.  Is was a nice sunny spring day and we (again) sat outsaide under the beautiful trees.  The trees kept us out of the warm sun and we could still see the beautiful mountains.

Again the food was great and presented  wonderfully.  I had a toasted sandwich and H tried the Bobotie tramezzini with salad.  (As you may have noticed H is more adventurous than me when it come to food choices)  He loved the tramezzini and after I tasted it, I agree.  It was very busy but the staff staff was friendly and the service good.

Woodpecker Pizza Deli
And lastly our favourite meal in Swellendam.  On our walk during the day we saw Woodpecker Pizza and decided to try it for dinner.  It was the best pizza we ever had.  The atmosphere in the restaurant was great.  We sat outside but it was cooling down and we moved to a table inside.  (Maybe the kids making a noise and running around outside also had a tiny roll in the move)  Inside it was cozy.

The staff was friendly and soon our pizza arrived. We bought 2 different pizzas and both were great but the Popeye was amazing. (I think it was spinach, bacon and feta)  Unfortunatly I forgot to take a photo.  Next time we drive pass we will stop in Swellendam for this pizza.

And to end the posts about Swellendam, one more photo of the pretty Langberge Mountains.

  1. What is tramezzini? Is it really just a tea sandwich with the crusts cut off? I'm not sure if I would have tried the ostrich, but that pizza does sound delish - you sure have great luck in restaurants!

  2. I used to have a particular favourite spot just past the museum with outside seeting overlooking a stream below when I was still guiding. Always stopped there when the weather was good.
